Free online resources celebrate AAPI heritage all year long

Throughout May, Liaison has been running a special blog series to celebrate Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Our previous posts have addressed Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders’ access to higher education, the key role they play in U.S. colleges and universities and society’s skewed perceptions of this segment of the population.

With the end of May in sight, this final post highlights additional resources you can pursue all year long to better understand the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to our lives.

  • Described as “a museum without walls,” the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center helps tell “the story of a vibrant, diverse and resilient set of communities that have been part of the American experience for more than two hundred years.” Events and exhibits include videos featuring AAPI artists, culinary experts and farmers, among others.
  • Created by the Library of Congress, AsianPacificHeritage.gov features online panel discussions, lectures as well as extensive audio and video recordings about AAIP culture and free resources for teachers. Contributors include the Smithsonian Institution, the National Parks Service, the National Gallery of Art and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
  • Stop AAPI Hate was launched in 2020 by the Asian Pacific Planning and Policy Council, Chinese for Affirmative Action and the Asian American Studies Department of San Francisco State University to combat “the alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.” The center documents acts of hatred, violence and other forms of discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and offers an online forum to report them.
  • Anti-Racism Resources for the AAPI Community, a forum created by the Asian American Studies Program at Cornell University, offers links to articles, podcasts and other web sites addressing topics ranging from Asian-American feminism, to labor rights to the history of racism in the United States.
  • The goal of Supporting API Communities is “to mobilize the philanthropic sector towards meaningful action in the midst of heightened violence and hate targeting Asian American communities.” For those eager to put their money where their mouth is, it also provides links to more than two dozen foundations supporting AAPI communities across the country.
