Highlights from Higher Ed: Teacher Diversity and Unnecessary Remedial Courses

That’s the percentage of teachers in public and private elementary and high schools who are white. Studies show that teacher diversity can make a difference in students’ performance and their interest in school, particularly for black male students. In another study of 106,000 students, when black children had a black teacher between third and fifth grades, boys were significantly less likely to later drop out of high school, and both boys and girls were more likely to attend college.

That’s the percentage of America’s 4,000 colleges and universities that will be bankrupt by 2033, according to Harvard professor and author Clayton Christensen, who helped coin the term “disruptive innovation.” Forbes disputes this claim with data from the last five years of financial data.

That’s the percentage of students in three affected programs at Cornell University’s Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management who showed “overwhelming support for grade nondisclosure” during a recent vote. The new policy, which is effective immediately, asks recruiters to “respect the student vote and refrain from asking about grades.” Cornell is hoping that the new policy will encourage students to take more academic risks.

That’s the percentage of community college students who are asked to take remedial courses. A study from the Community College Research Center and social policy group MDRC found that these students might succeed in traditional courses based on factors not relating to GPA and traditional tests.
