Highlights from Higher Ed: Career Colleges and Postsecondary Credentials


That’s how much the number of career colleges and the number of credentials they award have dropped in the last four years as for-profit colleges continue to struggle. According to an annual report from the National Center for Education Statistics, 2,791 for-profit colleges were eligible to award federal financial aid for this school year, a number which has dropped significantly from 3,436 in 2014.

That’s the percentage of Tennesseans with a postsecondary credential in 2018, compared to 33.3% in 2012. Governor Bill Haslam has set a goal of reaching 55% by 2025.

Facebook will provide its curriculum to community colleges and educational providers, and in some cases will award scholarships for students to attend the program.
