2020-2021 PostbacCAS Scholarship

This year, the two PostbacCAS scholarship recipients were Henri Lenoir, who is enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions program at the University of Colorado Boulder, and Douglas Pula, who is at the University of Virginia’s Post Baccalaureate Pre-Medical program.

Henri Lenoir, University of Colorado Boulder

Henri grew up in the United States but followed his parents to France as a teenager, earning an undergraduate degree at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest where he majored in Psychology, followed by a graduate degree in Neuropsychology at the Université de Paris.

While in France, Henri had the opportunity to work in several Parisian hospitals as a neuropsychologist, an experience he loved. Thanks, in particular to certain doctors he worked with during this time, Henri realized he would love to pursue a career in medicine. This coincided with the fact that he wanted to move back to the United States, where he was accepted to the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions program at the University of Colorado Boulder, a state where Henri had spent several years as a child.

Upon completing the program, Henri looks forward to expanding his scope of practice as a medical doctor while utilizing his background in psychology to develop a deeper perspective on health care.

Apart from his academic and professional pursuits, Henri is passionate about classical music, sports, and technology. He is particularly fascinated by how medicine will develop to accompany the new age of space exploration, and how telehealth could provide easier access to health care for all.

About the post baccalaureate program:

The Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions program at the University of Colorado Boulder is a one-year career-changer program that is characterized by a close-knit, cohort-based student group; high-quality pre-health advising; dedicated tutors and mentors; and rigorous academics. To maintain the quality of the program, the size of each cohort is intentionally limited to roughly 10 to 20 students per year. The program fosters a student culture of mutual support and collaboration, not competition. Year after year, students achieve close to a 100% admission rate to professional school. Students who complete the program regularly earn MCAT scores in the 90-99th percentile (median in each of the past three years: 516).

Douglas Pula, University of Virginia

Douglas graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in History with distinction honors in 2019, before moving to New York City to pursue a career in banking, followed by a stint at a start-up to learn more about entrepreneurship.

As the pandemic worsened, Douglas realized he wanted to do something to help, becoming a volunteer driver for his local Volunteer Ambulance Corps. It was an exhilarating experience that led to him first shadowing some physicians, then joining a large orthopedic practice as a scribe, and being exposed to high patient volumes. On his days off, Douglas observed different surgeons’ schedules in trauma surgery, orthopedic surgery, and cardiac surgery. Seeing his first coronary artery bypass graft that ultimately pushed him to apply to the University of Virginia.

Douglas chose the University of Virginia because he wanted to work with other students who were true “career changers,” individuals who had tested other career paths and were investing in themselves by coming here. The program was especially appealing for its cohort size and the excellent, small classroom experience where instructors are always available to students, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for any given subject.

Following his post-baccalaureate program, Douglas plans to take a gap year and would like to conduct research at a large academic medical center. Douglas likes to balance his academic pursuits with running, swimming, and boxing. He advises all fellow and future career changers to always have a plan, even if they are subject to change. When plans do change, be decisive and adjust accordingly to the new playing field. Set good goals and rise to meet the challenges, he says, because you will surprise yourself with what you can accomplish.

About the post baccalaureate program:

The Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical program at the University of Virginia is an 11-month career-changer program that provides students with a collaborative environment and a structured experience for completing medical school pre-requisites. Each cohort is limited to 30-35 students who have the opportunity to volunteer and interact with patients and healthcare providers in various clinical settings, thanks to the program’s strong relationship with the UVA Health System as well as the Charlottesville Free Clinic. Over the past fifteen years, 95% of the post-baccalaureate program alumni have gained acceptance into a wide variety of medical schools across the United States.

Liaison IMPACT Grant

Following our acquisition of TargetX, we have launched a new initiative called Liaison IMPACT Grant. This is a Liaison employee-funded initiative aimed to support programs that directly benefit students. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by June 30, 2022, and award two $25,000 grants during the Liaison User Conference in July 2022.

Any client or partner who has a contract with any Liaison division (CAS, EMP, Othot, SlideRoom, TargetX, or Time2Track) is eligible to apply; schools will be selected based on their commitment to improving the student experience.

Since the grant was founded at the TargetX division (formerly known as Power of X), employees have given nearly $50,000, awarding grants ranging from $11,000 to $18,000, that have helped fund low-income, first-generation students and students who are at risk of unforeseen financial emergencies.

The application to apply for the Liaison IMPACT Grant will open in the spring of 2022.
