Annual Meeting of the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools

Critical Junctures in Graduate Education

Graduate education today faces uncertainties and pressures that continue to create instability and pose threats. In this moment of flux, the graduate education community has an opportunity to see critical junctures where bold change is possible—perhaps more possible now than during times of stability. Navigating these critical junctures, however, will require leaders and change agents who are ready to manage the uncertainties and pressures with collaboration, compassion, and creativity. CSGS recognizes that the city of Raleigh, in the heart of North Carolina’s Research Triangle—a place where academia, industry, and government collaborate and innovate everyday—offers an ideal setting for us to come together to confront the critical junctures in graduate education today. As we prepare for the return to an in-person annual meeting, the CSGS Executive Board and the 2022 Conference Program Committee now welcome proposals for concurrent panel presentations and poster sessions. While all proposals will be considered, we especially seek those connected to the following three broad conceptual themes:

  1. Foundational Pressures: Some ideas include legal challenges, the demand to show relevancy, the need to remain solvent, resistance to change, and/or doing more with less.
  2. Collaborative Opportunities: We especially want to learn about external and internal partnerships, how institutions have made them work, how they can be modeled or replicated, and/or other on-campus collaborations that support graduate education in new and inventive ways.
  3. Innovative Solutions: Share your ideas for promoting graduate student success in ways that address the distinct needs of our students in this unprecedented time, changing graduate education to support growth and/or flexibility, retooling the skillset of long-serving graduate faculty advisors and mentors, and/or onboarding new faculty mentors.

Submit your proposal online using the link below by September 15, 2021. Note that the online form is designed to be completed in one setting, so we encourage you to review and prepare your answers in advance.
