Black Students Most Disadvantaged in the Deep South

A new report published by the University of Southern California reveals that black public university students in Louisiana and Mississippi, the two U.S. states with the highest percentage of African-American residents, are among the most disadvantaged nationwide. Researchers generated scores for states based on demographics, gender, graduation rates and student-to-professor ratios.

IHE’s Annual College and University Admissions Survey Released

Inside Higher Ed’s 2018 Survey of College and University Admissions Directors was released this week. It explores college admissions leaders’ predictions for the future of standardized tests, their beliefs on the weight of race in admissions and their worries about maintaining enrollment levels.

Remedial Courses to Make a Comeback at LSU?

LSU ended its remediation program in 2001. Since then, the University has entrusted raising the skill levels of freshman who are ill-prepared for college-level study to the remedial courses offered by its partner Baton Rouge Community College. Now that the University is taking a holistic approach to admissions, opponents of the new policy are arguing that relaxing admissions requirements could undo all of the progress made towards moving away from remediation. They see giving more weight to recommendation letters, personal essays and extracurricular activities over standardized tests and GPAs as opening up the possibility that remedial courses will return to the campus.

The 10 Highest Paying College Majors

STEM jobs dominate PayScale’s survey of 2.3 million graduates, which revealed the careers with the highest median earnings after five and ten years in the field. According to PayScale Vice President Lydia Frank, “While earning potential should not be the only consideration, it is an important factor, especially when evaluating the cost of education today.”
