On June 17th, 2014 Snapchat announced a fancy new feature that allows anyone to share moments from a popular event by adding snaps to the same story. This will create a live stream with a string of photos and videos from a 24-hour period that anyone within a certain distance of the location can view.
“Our Story” now enables users to view “snaps” from a single event in one place. Here’s how:
1. Shoot or record a “snap”
2. If your location services are on, allowing your mobile device to pinpoint the location, you will have the option to add it to “Our Story” with one tap.
In the blog post announcing the new feature, the company stated, “We wanted to build something that offered a community perspective – lots of different points of view. After all, our friends often see the same things in totally different ways. We built Our Story so that Snapchatters who are at the same event location can contribute Snaps to the same Story…. If you can’t make it to an event, watching Our Story makes you feel like you’re right there!”
At Spectrum, we see this as an opportunity for higher education recruitment. What better way to allow students to visit the school in “real time”? For example, say there’s an Open House at your university this weekend – take it to the next level and allow your ambassadors to record and add real time personal snaps to the college’s “Our Story.” Visitors would be able to get a glimpse of the campus through the eyes of a current student.
The use of Snapchat continues to rise, with 77% of college students using the application daily. The app has grown 67% from December 2013 to May 2014, and there are more than 1 billion Snapchat Stories viewed per day. As Snapchat continues to grow and the new recruitment season is right around the corner, maybe it’s time to rethink your social media strategy — has your college jumped on board?
